Reptile Handling: Best Practices

Handling reptiles requires understanding and respect for these unique creatures. Here are some essential guidelines to ensure both safety and comfort for you and the reptile:

1. Create a Safe Environment

  • Ensure that the surrounding area is safe and secure. Remove any objects that might hurt the reptile or inhibit its natural movement. Remove all pets from the area.

2. Approach Calmly

  • Always approach our reptiles slowly and calmly to avoid startling it. Sudden movements can provoke stress or defensive behaviour.

3. Support the Body

  • When holding a reptile, support its entire body. Use both hands to provide a secure hold, preventing it from feeling unsupported and anxious.

4. Avoid Grasping

  • Do not grasp a reptile tightly, as this can cause stress and injury. Allow it to feel secure in your hands, maintaining a gentle grip.

5. Wash Hands Before and After

  • Always wash your hands before and after handling a reptile or use the sanitiser gel provided by our team. This is to prevent the spread of bacteria and to maintain hygiene for both you and the animal.

6. Follow Instructions.

  • Make sure to comply with any instructions given by our team. Any parents/guardians of children attending are expected to ensure all children in their care listen to these instructions. This is to ensure the safety and welfare of our animals.

By following these practices, you can ensure safe and respectful interactions with reptiles, fostering a positive experience for both you and these fascinating creatures.

Warnings will be given if these guidelines are ignored and may result in the removal of any person(s) who are not complying. We have the right to remove ourselves and our animals if these are continuously being ignored or if we feel that the safety of the animals or ourselves is compromised.
